It's not just the colour of the pictures that distinguishes Japanese comics from their Western counterparts. You should read manga not from left to right like a book or the usual, Western comics, but from right to left. In order to understand some of the more significant differences between Japanese comics and their Western counterparts, let's turn to the history of their origin.

Western (US) comics emerged during the Great Depression, which was the impetus for their creation. Comics came out in large print runs, colourful illustrations and took the reader into an illusory world, a world of fantasy, allowing a distraction from the problems of the day. This is exactly what Americans, exhausted by the economic crisis, needed. The plot of comic books is usually far from reality.

Some sources have claimed that manga are hundreds or even thousands of years old - that's not true! It has been around since the Second World War.
